Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof) and Vienna Meidling Train Station

The Vienna Central Train Station is the most modern and important national and international transportation hub in Austria. All of Austrian Federal Railways’ (ÖBB) long-distance trains stop here and at the Wien-Meidling station a bit further south. Linking the west, south, north and east lines creates two opportunities to switch trains. Nearly every long-distance destination served by the ÖBB can be reached with a maximum of one change of trains. Railjets and Intercity Express (long-distance) trains coming from the west also go to the Central Train Station. State capitals Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Linz and St. Pölten are connected directly to Vienna’s airport via the Main Station.

Getting to the Main Station and Wien-Meidling station is easy with public transportation. They can be reached from any subway or rapid transit railway station in Vienna in under 30 minutes.

Vienna International Airport Schwechat

Vienna is a major hub between East and West thanks to its location in the heart of Europe. Vienna International Airport offers 628 daily direct flights to 240 cities worldwide, and is renowned for its high quality service, short transfer intervals and excellent punctuality ratings.

From touchdown to downtown – getting from Vienna International Airport to the city centre

Vienna International Airport is located about 11 miles (18 km) east of the heart of Austria’s capital. With the number of ways to get downtown as diverse as the travellers taking them, visitors have the luxury of choosing the way into the city that suits them best. Here’s a run-down of the varied options.

Downtown in a flash – City Airport Train

The City Airport Train (known in Vienna as the CAT) offers a direct express link between the airport and the city centre. Once you pick up your luggage in the airport’s baggage claim, follow the green CAT signs and you will soon be on your way! Travelling along the same tracks as the S7 commuter train, the CAT is much faster because it makes no stops.

Vienna Airport lines – Bus airport shuttle

Another option that’s quicker than the commuter train and cheaper than a taxi or the CAT is the bus service available from Vienna Airport Lines. With three lines from the airport to different city locations.

After collecting your bags at baggage claim, follow the signs for buses. For the 22-minute journey to the downtown destination Schwedenplatz, buses run from roughly 04:50 to 00:20 and leave the airport every 30 minutes. Other lines will take you beyond downtown like to the 22nd (Kagran) or 15th districts (Westbahnhof). You can purchase tickets directly from the driver in the bus.

The bargain option – S7

A set of train tracks runs from the city centre to the airport, and while there is a special airport direct link train that makes use of them, it’s a well-known fact among thrifty locals that a commuter train runs along them too. Travellers can hop on the S7 Schnellbahn at the airport and 26 minutes (and a few stops) later arrive at WIEN MITTE. This is a transport crossroads at the Landstrasse underground stop in downtown Vienna that is well connected to other public transport options.

Trains run daily between 04:00 and midnight. Those to Vienna leave in the ‘Floridsdorf’ direction at 17 and 42 minutes past the hour and those back to the airport leave at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour in the ‘Flughafen Wien’ or ‘Wolfsthal’ direction. While this option does take longer than the others, the price really just cannot be beaten.

Door to door – airport taxis

The airport is located directly on the A4 motorway. It takes around 25 minutes to reach the Austria Center. Price should be approx. 36 EUR.

Airport Transfer with a Private Car Service

The most relaxed and comfortably transportation from the Vienna airport is a private airport transfer service. Pre-book your private airport transfer and enter your flight information and a driver will be waiting for you in the Vienna airport arrivals hall. The driver will guide you to the vehicle where you will be able to relax while you get driven directly to apartment or hotel in Vienna. A private airport transfer is about the same price as a taxi but a more reliable service, you do not have to wait in a taxi line - the driver comes to you.
